#MobileLife: Top 5 News Reading Apps on Android

With smartphones in our pockets these days we have easy and quick access to information. Checking email and social networks are probably among the top activities on a smartphone but the ability to keep track of news and current affairs on the go is changing how we consume news (read: Indian smartphone users are more active than their US counterparts).

In fact, from personal experience thanks to a number of apps, I can say that my source of news has changed from television news channels and newspapers to my smartphone.

Flipboard is probably one of the most popular apps on iOS and when it came to Android it made big news. The app brings together world news and social news in a beautiful magazine format. One can easily select topics that are of interest to you and to browse through stories one can flip like one does with the pages of a magazine. The app also allows you to create your own magazine which others can subscribe to. The integration of social networks makes it easy to get all your news in one place.

Pulse News


Pulse News was one of the earliest news readers on Android and brings all your favorite blogs, magazines, social networks and newspapers to one place. The user interface is well designed and the single article view is one of the cleanest we have seen. It has a Highlight feature which showcases stories shared by your friends. There is also an Offline sync mode where the app stores the articles so that you can read it without an internet connection.

This news aggregating app tries to personalize the news experience. It is a smart reader that learns what kind of stories you like and dislike and recommends stories that way. News360 claims to have content from over 50,000 sources. The Home feed provides all the top articles you’re interested in so that you don’t have to waste time jumping between sections or feeds. Users can also create an account and sync the feeds between a number of smart devices and also at the news360.com website. The app also uses a device’s GPS to prioritize local news.

This app by Dotted Circle is one which cuts out all the flab and provides one of the simplest ways to read news from your favorite sources. The interface provides for a way to quickly real a summary of the articles submitted. It provides offline access to all the news articles and articles which have been read will have black and white images. Like all the other apps in this list it has a one share button to multiple social network sites. One can schedule when to refresh articles easily. The app also allows you to follow articles recommended by other users.
