Caller Id service Truecaller has launched Truemessenger, a replacement SMS app for Android devices that filters out spam.
The service has been launched exclusively in India and has a spam filter that’s powered by the 150 million users strong Truecaller community.
SMS is still the most widely used form of messaging with over 8 trillion messages being sent annually, but 15% of this is spam, amounting to 1.2 trillion messages each year.
Further, Truemessenger also puts names against numbers which aren’t saved on a device’s contacts, just as how Truecaller alerts users of incoming calls from unknown numbers.
OTT messaging is growing in popularity, but SMS remains a leader in the mobile messaging field, especially in the USA, where the SMS app remains the most used app in the country as outlined by the 2015 Ericsson Mobility Report.
The app has been launched in India but the company has plans to take it to global market soon. Truemessenger is complementary to Truecaller and Truedialer apps with all three services hinging on the crowdsourced number database the company’s users are curating.
