Facebook Research Labs issued an update, envisioning a future wherein humans can now type straight from the brain to computer or smartphone. Facebook revealed how researchers detected speech from brain activity. The ultimate goal is said to be devising a system that lets user type 100 words per minute with their brain.
This research is part of the large research program at UCSF supported by FRL called Project Steno. Researchers relied on machine learning algorithms to decode words by brain activity of the volunteers (research participants with normal speech, who were undergoing brain surgery to treat epilepsy). The algorithm is still limited in the number of phrases and words it can recognize.
