Uber Bids Farewell To Its Auto-rickshaw Service In India Within 7 Months Of Its Launch

Uber has quietly shut down its uberAUTO service in New Delhi, just seven months after its launch in India.

“We are temporarily removing this product to solve specific problems that need to be resolved to help it scale,” said a spokesperson for Uber to Quartz. The company has shut down uberAUTO two weeks ago, and did not provide any specific timeline for a relaunch.

uberAUTO was one of the few country-specific plans that the company had launched in India. They also enabled cash payments for the service during the launch.

“The feedback from both riders and drivers has been tremendous…In fact many riders have become avid Uber riders because they got introduced to Uber because of uberAUTO and now use the other products as well, and really like the cashless experience Uber provides,” added the spokesperson.

Despite the positive feedbacks that the service received, Uber did not expand its autorickshaw service in other cities.

The new development comes at a time when its rivals, Ola, Didi, Lyft and Grab Taxi formed a global rideshare partnership to take on Uber.

Given the supply constraint, no wonder Jugnoo has decided to name/shame Ola for bribing their drivers.
