Uber Signs MoU With Punjab Govt, Set To Launch Peer-to-Peer Ride-Sharing Pilot

Taxi-hailing app Uber is set to launch a peer-to-peer ride-sharing pilot business model in Punjab. Uber signed an MOU with the Government of Punjab on Thursday to develop the pilot model.

Private car owners in Punjab will now be able to register on the Uber app to ferry passengers. The company aims to create over 45,000 opportunities in Punjab in the next five years through this business.

Private car owners who sign up with Uber will be subject to verification and background checks, said Uber.

The Central Motor Vehicles Act doesn’t allow private car owners to carry passengers for a fee, even though several states are reportedly encouraging car-pooling among citizens.
