Chinese browser company UCWeb has launched an open add-on platform with its new browser version for which third party developers can make add-ons for the browser.
The browser, which claims 400 million users worldwide, now comes with a few preloaded add-ons such as the Facebook photo uploader and save web pages as pdf add on.
It also has an addon to unzip compressed files and translate web pages. The platform enables two way communication between the UC Browser and the Android system’s services which makes data sharing easier.
The UC Browser API has been standardized to make it more accessible. The company did not say when the platform will go live.
The company which launched in India in November 2011, had a 23% marketshare in India, according to Statcounter. In October last year, the company claimed that it was the most downloaded mobile browser on Google Play.
