The Unique Identification Authority of India, charged with issuing a unique online verifiable identification number to 1.2 billion Indians has released the API for electronic Know Your Customer (KYC) verification.
This will simplify millions of transactions that are required by the government to follow the know your customer norms. Presently, most of is it is done offline in the old fashioned way with self attested copies and signatures.
According to the authority, as part of the e-KYC process, the resident authorizes UIDAI (through Aadhaar authentication) to provide their basic demographic data along with their digitally signed photograph to service providers.
Service providers can provide a paperless KYC experience by using e-KYC and avoid the cost of repeated KYC,the cost of paper handling and storage, and the risk of forged documents, says the central government agency.
At present, verification of the identity and address is a process taken up before people access financial products (payment products, bank accounts, insurance products, market products), SIM cards for mobile telephony, and different government services. Aadhaar , the Unique Identification number issued to residents, is already a valid proof of identity and address for many services (API documentation (pdf))
