Part of the company’s new Modular Infotainment Platform (MIB II), its cars will be able to seamlessly integrate with smartphones through CarPlay and Android Auto.

The two rival platforms from Apple and Google have emerged as sophisticated alternatives to carmakers’ often dull in-car infotainment systems.

Android Auto and CarPlay extend a smartphone’s functionality within a car, making it safe for drivers to use in-car navigation and other tools safely via voice commands, etc.

By offering both Apple and Google platform integration, Volkswagen hopes to offer customers benefits of connectivity regardless of the smartphone they use.

Both platforms offer integration with third-party apps specifically built for in-car use while also offering native services such as Maps, calling and messaging.
