Amazon layoffs: Online retail giant to fire 18,000 workers

In response to "the uncertain economy," Amazon stated it would eliminate more than 18,000 positions from its workforce.

The online retail giant acknowledged that it had "hired rapidly" during the pandemic.

CEO Andy Jassy says, "between the reductions we made in November and the ones we're sharing today, we plan to eliminate just over 18,000 roles."

In November, the company announced 10,000 layoffs.

Jassey said the company's leadership was "deeply aware that these role eliminations are difficult for people."
