Greta Thunberg detained briefly by German police at coal mine protest
Climate activist Greta Thunberg and other activists were detained on Tuesday during demonstrations opposed to the demolition of a village.
According to the police, the village was destroyed to make room for the construction of a coal mine.
At the Garzweiler 2 open-pit coal mine, which is 9 km from the community of Luetzerath, Thunberg was detained while staging a demonstration.
Activists said Germany should stop mining lignite, or brown coal, and instead focus on boosting renewable energy.
Greta Thunberg was released after an identity check.
