Google Doodle slices into the history of pizza

You might be surprised to find that humans have been eating pizza or something similar to it since ancient times, making it hard to pinpoint when it was first created.

The dish is most likely derived from focaccia and matzah (flatbreads), frequently topped with cheeses, meats, and vegetables, much like the pizzas we consume today.

Consuming  flatbreads with a variety of toppings has been an ancient practice in Egypt and Rome, and has been a part of various cuisines for centuries.

The earliest “pizzas” didn’t have tomato sauce, as tomatoes originated in the Americas and weren’t introduced to Europe until the 16th century.

At this time, in Naples, Italy, residents of poorer areas began putting tomatoes on their flatbreads, creating the pizza we know today.

By 1807, there were 54 distinct pizzerias in Naples.   Margherita pizza is one of the most traditional kind of pizza that is still eaten today.
