Marie Tharp: Google Doodle celebrates life of American geologist

The Library of Congress recognized Marie Tharp as one of the greatest cartographers of the 20th century on this day in 1998.

Google is today celebrating the life of Marie Tharp with a special and interactive doodle on its homepage.

A number of illustrations that detail Marie Tharp's life and career can be accessed through the interactive doodle.

Marie Tharp was born on July 30, 1920, in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

In 1948, she moved to New York City and became the first woman to work at the Lamont Geological Observatory.
