From a Tonga Waalah to the king of spices

MDH founder Dharampal Gulati passed away on the 3rd of December, 2020.

Dharampalji was born in 1923 in Sialkot, Pakistan.

He quit school in his 5th standard and joined his dad's spice trade.

He later on moved to New Delhi during India's partition with Rs. 1500 in his pocket.

He rented a shop in 1953 to sell spices and named it MDH, short for Mahashian Di Hatti.

He started making MDH ready-to-use masalas to help an Indian housewife.

Later on, the office was set up in 1959, when he established a factory.

He started establishing more manufacturing units as he saw a future in masala.

He was the highest paid FMCG CEO in India when he took Rs. 21 crores in 2017.

He is known to donate 90% of his salary.

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2019.

At an age when all of his peers were retired and relaxing, Dharampalji used to visit his factories.  Even on Sundays !

He has established quite a few hospitals and schools.

"Asli masale sach sach, MDH MDH…"  RIP Masala Maharaj.
