National Science Day 2023: CV Raman and the "Raman effect"

To honour the announcement of the "Raman Effect" discovery, the Indian government declared February 28 as National Science Day in 1986.

The physicist Sir CV Raman received his Nobel Prize in 1930 for this finding.

Raman found that a portion of the light scattered by a liquid when a stream of light passes through it is a different colour.

The scientific community instantly recognised this discovery as groundbreaking.

By 1921, CV Raman had established himself as a leading scientific figure in both India and the West.
