Shashi Tharoor is expected to contest Congress president polls

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor conveyed to the high command his intention to contest the upcoming party chief election.

Responding to the episode, Congress said no one needs a nod to contest the presidential election.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi said she would stay "neutral" in the elections.

Dispelling the notion that there will be an official candidate, Sonia welcomed the idea of more people contesting for the post.

The speculation is that Tharoor may announce his candidature in the next few days.

As of now, Tharoor and Gehlot could be the top contenders for the party's top office in case Rahul Gandhi decides not to contest the polls.

The nomination filing process for the election will be held from September 24 to 30.
