Australia's opener Travis Head risks missing WC after fracturing hand

Australia's star opener Travis Head may not participate in the ODI World Cup, after breaking his hand during a one day international against South Africa.

The injury happened as Australia faced a 164-run defeat to South Africa on Friday, Head had to retire hurt after being hit on the hand.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald confirmed the fracture, but the nature of the break and healing timeframe will be assessed.

Head, who has been a key player at the top of the innings in one-dayers, would be a major loss if ruled out of the World Cup.

One of Australia's best all-format batters, Head was the driving factor behind Australia's World Test Championship Final win against India earlier this year.

In Head's absence, Australia might considering bringing Cameron Green to the opener's position, who performed well against India.
