Welcare operates screening services in existing health centers making them accessible to patients at high-risk for eye diseases. The system costs less than half of what it would usually costs, United Seed Fund said.

Chennai based Welcare, led by ophthalmologists T Senthil and N Malathi, is now looking to expand to other cities. To begin with, the company is targeting 60 million diabetics in India, who are at high risk of eye diseases.

Its screening device (built by IDG & Accel backed Forus Healthcare) is Internet enabled so that a certified ophthalmologist can review and diagnose screenings remotely, reducing operating costs.

In April last year, Bangalore-based affordable medical technology and solutions company Forus Health raised Series A funding  of $5 million from Accel Partners and IDG Ventures India. Forus developed 3nethra, a portable low cost pre-screening ophthalmology solution capable of detecting cataract, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retina and other eye related problems.
