WordPress 3.0 is on its way and here are a few feature releases that lies ahead. But before that, let me share a big messaging change that WordPress is enabling 3.0 onwards
Revise Administration > Settings > General panel, change "Blog" reference to "Site"
WordPress isn’t just a blogging platform anymore and post 3.0 onwards, its more than a CMS.
Read on to get perspective on upcoming release of 3.0.
WordPress and WP MU to be Merged
First and foremost, WordPress and WordPress MU will be merged. This does not mean that you can suddenly start adding a bunch of new blogs from within your regular WordPress Dashboard. This merger will enable bloggers to create network of sites [be it via subdomain or subdirectories].
Basically, each additional site in the network can be created as a new virtual subdomain or subfolded, based on your requirement.
As we already mentioned, Buddypress integration was probably the most important step in building WP as a social tool [read: Amazing BuddyPress Themes to Help you build your own social network].
You can create custom menus easily. There are quite a few plugins that helps you create menus using category/sub category, but for those who want more flexibility – this feature is simply made for them.
Custom Post Types
There were a few plugins to achieve this and now, this has been incorporated in the new WP release. Apart from Posts and Pages, one can also create custom post types.
New Default Theme
WordPress 3.0 ships with a new default theme ("Twenty Ten”) that is a great improvement over the default/Kubrick theme.
Bulk Update of Plugins & Themes
This is probably the most requested feature for WordPress. With 3.0, you would be able to bulk upgrade themes as well as plugins.
Custom Background/Default Admin
During installation, you can choose your default user name – helps in order to keep WordPress secure [read: Guide to Protect your WordPress Installation [Security plugins/Tips].
Also, one can define custom background for your site [theme developers, take note of this].
Other Notable Features of WordPress 3.0
