As many as 18 crore workers across the country are on strike, seeking better wage and job and social security, among other issues. Trade unions say the protest is against the “anti-labour policies” of the Modi-led BJP govt. Their demands include a monthly minimum wage of Rs 18,000, controlling price rise in basic commodities, and assured minimum monthly pension of Rs 3,000.
The trade union workers were joined by the employees of banks, public sector, telecom, and factories, affecting essential services such as banking and public transport. Supply of milk and water has not been affected.
