All you need to do is think in your local language, type the same in english (for e.g. ‘Yeh Blog Mast Hai’ :), instead of ‘ye’) and that’s it! Quilpad will do the translation for you.
The idea is to type the word (in English) which is phonetically close to the local language.
This is definitely a great product and has hit the market at the right time (when PC/Internet penetration is increasing very significantly).
As of now, Quilpad supports only 5 languages: Hindi, Kannada, Malyalam, Tamil and Telugu.
Quilpad (product of Tachyon technologies) has licensed the product to rediff.com, but you can still use their site to send emails in your local language.
The product, to me looks like in a PoC phase (Proof of Concept), needs more flesh (read *features*); but does have a great potential for the Indian market. One of the major drawback of Quilpad is the lack of support for Mozilla.
Quilpad guys are also working on India specific search engine. Have a look
