Zomato Acquires US-Based Table Reservation Service NextTable

Zomato has acquired NextTable, a US-based restaurant reservation and table management platform that competes against services such as Priceline’s OpenTable and SeatMe from Yelp.
While no terms of the deal have been disclosed apart from it being a cash and stock one, the entire team from NextTable including founders TC DeSilva and Robert Tyree will make the move to Zomato.
Further, Zomato has said the NextTable will soon be rebranded as ‘Zomato Book’.
Zomato has been focusing on creating a seamless in-app experience for customers, and has been working on moving beyond just restaurant search and discovery, into table reservations, online ordering, and in-app cashless payments (Zomato has launched food ordering service in Delhi).
NextTable was bootstrapped, which seems to be one of the reasons why the company sold out to Zomato. TC DeSilva said that Zomato has the funding it needs to scale its sales team, and also its consumer presence will help acquire more customers.
Zomato has already planned to take NextTable’s table booking technology to India, UAE and Australia within this year. NextTable is Zomato’s second acquisition in the US, the first being UrbanSpoon, which is a direct competitor to Yelp.
The table-booking service will complement Zomato’s restaurant discovery and wallet payment services, adding another potential line of revenue generation. The Indian company also recently began its food ordering service in the New Delhi region, and plans to bring it to the rest of the country in the coming months.
