We tend to ask friends and family to fetch speciality products from well known places when they visit such places. For instance, during my last visit to Jaipur, I had to lug a Bandhej Suit and Mojri for a friend whose request I couldn’t decline. But now, I can direct such demands to Shopatplaces.com, an online store which collects popular products of well known places.
The Delhi based startup currently showcases famous products such as Pashmina shawls, Filigree jewelry from Orissa, Brass jewelry from Uttar Pradesh, Tussar silk stoles from Jharkhand, Chikankari apparel from Lucknow and several others products procured from places that are famous for making them.
Sharing the thought behind creating Shopatplaces, Zuhaib Khan, one of the founders said “I used to travel a lot while working for JP Morgan in London and every time I went to a new place, there were regular requests from our loved ones to bring back something unique from that place”. And then, as the adage goes, lightning struck! and Shopatplaces was born.”
To ensure smooth sourcing and a quick supply chain, founders left their jobs and traveled across the country for 6 months to set up Shopatplaces’s supply chain and vendor base. “It was a great learning phase for us, being on the ground and meeting the people who actually create all this great quality stuff,” added Khan.
Shopatplaces, currently dispatches products to its users within 24 hours from the time of the order placement and promises to deliver the products in 3- 7 days (depending on category). The company offers free customization for all its apparel. Buyers who’d like to customise their clothing can feed in measurements while buying. Usually, consumers who shop apparels online have to get it altered as their requirements later on. However Shopatplaces equips consumers to feed their measurement at the time of making purchase as per their body measurement.
Currently, Shopatplaces gets around 500 unique visitors and delivers products across the country. However, it aims to reach 100 transactions a day within 6 months with an average order size of Rs 1000-1200. Speaking about future plans, Khan said “Our short term plan is to have authentic products from each and every state of India within the first 12 months of our launch and to increase the number of categories we offer to our customers”. In addition to category expansion, Shopatplaces plans to bring internationally known products like Italian leather boots or Indonesian batik prints to consumers.
Shefur Khan, a former procurement specialist at Cadbury, is the other co-founder at the company. While the company will not go out in the market for funds till the time it needs a significant infusion, it is actively scouting for mentors, said Khan.
