Calling it an effort to safeguard democracy, the Democratic-controlled Senate’s legislation included proposals to outlaw spending by foreign-influenced corporations and expand voter access. State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, Deputy Senate Majority Leader Michael Gianaris, D-Queens and Senate Elections Committee Chair Kristen Gonzalez, D-Queens, appeared at a news conference Monday to push voting rights legislation that passed the Senate.
