Google Funds The Khan Academy – $2Mn Under Project 10tothe100

Google has announced the winners of Project 10tothe100 and The Khan Academy is amongst the selected 5. Khan academy is selected under the idea of Make educational content available online for free. Khan academy was started by Salman Khan, an HBS alum who started recording videos and put up the tutorials on Youtube on broad categories like – Mathematics, Economics, Algebra, Trigonometry, Physics, Chemisty etc.

The Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organisation that provides high-quality, free education to anyone, anywhere via an online library of more than 1,600 teaching videos. We are providing $2 million to support the creation of more courses and to enable the Khan Academy to translate their core library into the world’s most widely spoken languages.

Project 10tothe100 started by Google about 2 yrs ago, was an inviation for ideas that had the potential to change the world. Out of the 154,000 submissions, 16 top ideas were shortlisted and nominations for organiations working on those ideas were opened. A total of $10Mn is finally being invested in the final 5 Projects.

The other projects being funded are:

1. FIRST : a non-profit organisation that promotes science and maths education around the world through team competition.
2. Public.Resource.Org : a non-profit organisation focused on enabling online access to public government documents in the United States.
3. Shweeb : a concept for short-to-medium-distance, urban personal transport, using human-powered vehicles on a monorail.
4. African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) : a centre for maths and science education and research in Cape Town, South Africa.

Some of the popular ideas amongst the top 16 ideas were:

  • Build real-time, user-reported news service
  • Create more efficient landmine-removal programmes
  • Create real-time crisis and disaster tracking system
