Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shares in this interview with David Rubenstein the advice that changed the course of his life.

During the initial meetings around deciding the next CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella explicitly made it clear that he wasn’t hungering for the job and would only do it if the board wanted him to – which they found odd considering most people wanted the job.

Nadella says the advice he received from both Steve Ballmer, the outgoing CEO & Bill Gates was:

The best advice I got from both Bill & Steve helped me a lot. Their clear message was ‘don’t try to be like us’ – ‘don’t even bother to look at it as though you’re succeeding us’, just be your own. I remember talking to Steve, and he said ‘just be yourself, it’s too late to change’.
